Summary of Lease of 1557 to Sir Robert Lane

Mayor and Corporation of Lincoln
      to Sir Robert Lane of Horton, Northants. knight

of the rectory parsonage and manor of Hanslope with the appurtenances in Bucks., and the church and churchyard of the said parsonage with all their messuages houses buildings orchards gardens tofts crofts glebe land and tenements meadow pastures closures fordyngs rents and tithes oblations obligations fruits offerings waifs strays courts leets view of frankpledge ancient liberties and profits in Hanslope aforesaid

from the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary last for 38 years

to pay to the hand of the said mayor £104 per annum, to be paid at Michaelmas and Lady Day

Sir Robert is to pay all charges of the said rectory, and to pay the stipend of the vicar of Hanslope granted by Letters Patent of the late king Henry VIII
If payments are unpaid 6 weeks after they have been demanded then the grantors may lawfully reenter the property

Sir Robert will either permit the mayor and corporation of Lincoln at any time at their will to appoint a sufficient and able house with one orchard and garden to the same of any part or parcel of the mansion house of the said rectory or parsonage and of the ground belonging to the same to be the vicarage of Hanslope within one year next ensuing ..... at the proper costs and charges of the said Sir Robert Lane shall buy and purchase to the use of the said mayor and corporation of Lincoln forever one sufficient and able mansion house with one orchard and garden adjoining to the same to be set and builded in Hanslope near unto the parish church of Hanslope to be to the vicarage of Hanslope without any rent or other thing by the said mayor and corporation or by the vicar paying or doing the same to Sir Robert Lane; the vicar of Hanslope shall henceforth peaceably and quietly have occupy and enjoy the said house orchard and garden so assigned or purchased without hindrance

Sir Robert Lane covenants at his own costs and charges to well and sufficiently repair uphold and maintain and amend the said rectory parsonage houses and other buildings sett and builded of and upon the said parsonage and rectory, and to keep the said rectory and parsonage with all other houses and buildings there now covered with tile or slate covered with tile and slate

Not to sublet or assign without assent of mayor and corporation of Lincoln

Sir Robert Lane is to continually and from time to time inhabit the parsonage house or rectory and keep good house and hospitality in the same

Sir Robert Lane is to permit the next vicar of Hanslope and his successors from the day of his entry into the vicarage to peaceably enjoy or occupy the house buildings and all tithes and profits of the said rectory and parsonage in Castlethorpe being part and parcel of the same parsonage and rectory of Hanslope for and towards the maintenance of his house keeping, paying to Sir Robert Lane a yearly reasonable rent
