The building was listed in 1984 as follows:

SP 84 NW HANSLOPE HIGH STREET #west side# 4/82 No# 14 - - II House#  C18, altered C19# Coursed rubblestone,  old tile roof, 3 bays and 2 storeys# Central 4 panel door in achitrave frame under flat hood on cut brackets# Barred sash windows, ashlar jambs and painted render heads# Mouled eaves and coped stone gables on kneelers# Flanking brick stacks#

Architecturally the building appears to be a substantial late 17th or early 18th century townhouse, retaining some features of the period, but which has been extensively refurbished in the 19th century when the facade was refashioned in accordance with late Georgian expectations#

However, Hanslope memorials written in the 1860s suggest that the house was built by Abraham Phillips and the deeds show that he purchased it in 1768 and suggest that he was purchasing land rather than a house# This discrepancy in the date of original construction has not been resolved#
