Notes Basil Brent was the son of Sir Nathaniel Brent and Martha the daughter and heiress of Robert Abbot, Bishop of Salisbury, and niece of George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury. The influence of the Abbots secured Brent' election in 1622 to the wardenship of Merton College, Oxford. He was knighted by Charles I in 1636. On the outbreak of civil war he sided with Parliament and had to leave Oxford, returning when it was taken by Parliamentary forces to become president in 1647 of a parliamentary commission for Oxford University, retiring in 1651 after becoming dissatisfied with the proceeding of the commission. He died at his house in London in 1652.
