In the name of God Amen the iiij th daie of maie in ye yeare of our Lord God 1610  I William Bates of Hanslape in the countie of Bucks laborer sicke in bodie, but of good and p[er]fect remembrance (blessed be God) doe ordaine and make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following  ffirst I bequeathe my soule to God the ffather, Sonne and Gholy Ghost, with full assurance of the full remission of my sinnes, and hope of eternall life throughe ye meritte of  Christ Jesus myonly Lord and Saviour, my bodie I comend to the yearth there to remaine in hope untill the resurrection of the iust.  Item I geve and bequeathe to Margarett my Wife, my house wherein I dwell in Hanslape in the countie of Bucks  and all the lande tenements and appurtenances thereunto belonging or therewith used for and during her naturall life:  and after her decease then I will and geve ye said house lande and tenements with their apppurtenance unto John Bates my brother, of Piddington in the countie of northampton and to the heires of the said John ye sonne for ever.  Provided alwaies and my will is that the said John ye sonne shall in consideracon of ye bequest and gifte aforesaid paye unto Nicholas Bates my cosen of Hackleton in ye said countie of Northampton ye sume of iij pounds vj shillings viij pence of currant english money within one twelve monthes after the decease of the said Margarett my Wife and also shall paie unto .... of ffreeman Oustill of Hartwell in the said countie of Northampton his children vj shillings and viij pence a peece of currant english money at or upon the time aforesaid and also shall paie unto my kinsman Mathew Tailer x shillingsof like currant english money at or upon the time aforesaid:  Provided also and my will is that in consideracon of the said gifte unto the said John the sonne, ye said John the sonne shall at his owne coste and chardges yearlie ploughe eare and till or cause to be ploughed eared and tilled all the arrable land belonging to or used with the said house for and during the naturall life of the said Margarett my Wife, to the use of the said Margarett.  Item I will and geve unto Margarett my said wife all my goods and chattels of what sort soever that or any of them bee and if any of my said goods or chattels shall remaine after ye decease of my said wife, then I will  that they shall come and remaine and be to John Bates aforesaid and to his use for ever.  Item I doe ordaine and make Margarett my said wife the sole executrix of this my last will and testament to see my will performed, my debts paied and my funerall dischardged.  In wittnes whereof I ye said William Bates have hereunto sett my hand and seale in the presence of thes whos names are hereunder written  Frauncis Giffard  The mark of Alice ffreeman the mark of Amie Stafford the mark of Anne Horne
