This ODHS website features a major article on the business of JW & E Sowmans. The article provides an insight into business from the late 1880's, when it was essentially an ironmongers, to the late 1930's, when it had extended into a comprehensive emporium, having added a radio shop, a garage, an agricultural machinery workshop and several other related businesses. A glimpse of the Olney Sowmans' family life is also provided through the provision of many family photographs.

Listed building

The building is listed with particulars as follows.

Grade II LateCl8 altered. Stone, steep pitched slate roof with two large flat topped dormers with sash windows deep eaves with wooden cornice having pairs of shallow brackets. Two storeys, shop front to ground floor, three sash windows with keystones to first floor.
