Green Manor, former Green Man Inn

Building to left   building to right

The earliest surviving part of Green Manor is a late medieval building of 11/2 stories which originally had a gable end to Market Square.  This end of the building was later demolished to make way for a substantial stone three bay 17th century house facing Market Square.  This house has some fine fireplaces, including one which appears to have been rescued from an earlier building.

The building is likely to have been a private dwelling until the first half of the 19th century.  In the second half of the 18th century it was occupied by Joseph Brittain, three of whose daughters married sons of senior figures in the village.

The building became the Green Man pub sometime between 1818 and 1851, and then remained a pub at least until it closed in 1956.  By 1910 it was owned by Aylesbury Brewery.

The earliest information available is from the survey of 1779 when the Green Manor was owned by Joseph Brittain who is records as a plumber and glazer.  In the Hanslope "memorials" written some years later, it is remembered that Joseph Brittain built a "blumbery" on the premises, which is probably a spelling of "bloomery", a type of furnace used for smelting.  In his will Joseph Brittain left the "house I now dwell in" to the children of his deceased daughter, Charlotte Kitelee.  Joseph Brittain's wife is said to have kept a shop in what later became the public bar.

Some time in the first half of the 19th century, the Green Man pub transferred here from what is now Magpies Nook.  This transfer took place sometime after the survey of 1818, and quite likely not until after the death of the publican Thomas Billing in 1837.

By 1851 Richard Gregory was recorded here in the census as a "victualer" and later and innkeeper.  By 1871 he was succeeded by Henry Newbury who remained at least until 1891.  By 1910 the property was owned by Aylesbury Brewery & Co when Albert Greenwood was the tenant.  He remained until at least 1918.  His wife Jemima had a shop at the bottom of the garden at the corner of the entrance to Market Square from Gold Street.

By 1928 Edgar Eakins is the publican and his family remained until the pub was closed by Mrs Eakins in 1956.
