4 Gold Street, formerly on High St

The map of 1900 appears to show three houses here. Old residents can only remember two. There are now a pair of symmetrical cottages resulting from conversion of an outbuilding in the early 19th century. The earlier building is probably of the late 17th or early 18th century date.

Well into the 20th Century, these houses were approached from High Street via a long path that ran between the gardens of the houses. These gardens are now part of the Cock Inn, and the two remaining houses have been changed so that their main entrance is on Gold Street.

These buildings were listed in 1984:

SP 84 NW HANSLOPE HIGH STREET (east side) 4/81 Nos. 37 and 39 - - II Pair of cottages. C18. Coursed rubblestone and thatch. Each of 2 bays and 2 storeys. Central doors. To north east (Gold Street elevation) with modern hoods, No. 37 thatched. No. 39 tiled. 2 light casements above and between doors. 3-light leaded casements to south west elevation. End and party wall stacks.

A view over the roofs of buildings on High Street of the cottages now known as 4 Gold Street which are in the left-centre of the photograph.

Against the left edge of the photograph is the old Cock.  At the time the two cottages were accessed from High Street through the gardens which were beside the Cock.

The photograph also shows the small, lean-to style building attached to the southern end of the cottages.  This has since been demolished.

Aerial view, probably from 1930s or 1940s.

The Cock Inn is in the centre of the photograph. Behind it to the top left of the photograph is the roof of these cottages. Behind the cottages is Gold Street.

At this period, the main entrance to the cottages was to High Street, in the lower right of the photograph. The access path with the gardens of the cottages on either side is visible to the right of the Cock.

View from church tower in 1957.

The Cock is on the left of the photograph, with High Street in front of it. The roof of the cottages is in the upper right. Houses at the top centre are on the far side of Gold Street.

It appears that by this time, the gardens of the cottages had been acquired by the Cock, which uses then as a beer garden.

View from High Street when these cottages had their main entrance onto High Street via a central path, with gardens belonging to each cottage on either side of the path.

In April 2006, viewed from Gold Street.

The cottage to the right is numbered 4 and called Christmas Cottage. The cottage to the left is numbered 4A The flag is in honour of the Queen's 80th birthday.
